Summit Brownfields Revitalization Program - Summit Lake (Akron Beacon Journal article)

NEFCO’s Summit Brownfields Revitalization Program, funded by a grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, contracts with environmental consulting firms to investigate Summit County properties that have suspected or actual environmental contaminants that inhibit redevelopment.  NEFCO will fund a Phase I environmental site assessment, an ecological data evaluation, and a Phase II lake assessment of Summit Lake properties.  This work will inform the direction of activities coordinated by the Trust for Public Land, and initiated by a $5 million Reimagining the Civic Commons grant, to revitalize public spaces.  Besides NEFCO, the Summit Lake project partners include the City of Akron, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Knight Foundation, Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition, and the Trust for Public Land.  The Summit Brownfields Revitalization Program, led by NEFCO, has assessed over 20 brownfield properties in Summit County.  Program coalition members consist of NEFCO, Summit County Public Health, and the Development Finance Authority of Summit County.

Several environmental site assessments have been performed under the Summit Brownfields Revitalization Program, funded by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant and administered by NEFCO. We will highlight some of the program's brownfields assessments that have led to exceptional reuses of once-vacant and/or contaminated properties.

To Improve The Region's Quality of Life, Through Collaborative Planning Efforts with NEFCO's Area Governments, in Order to Ensure:

- Environmental Quality
- Orderly Growth
- Economic and Community Development

The Northeast Ohio Four County Regional Planning and Development Organization (NEFCO) was formed in 1974 as a regional council of governments by the elected officials within Portage, Stark, Summit and Wayne Counties. NEFCO was created as a voluntary organization to enable local officials to discuss problems facing the Region and to develop strategies to cope with them. NEFCO also serves as a forum through which local, state and federal planning programs can be more effectively coordinated.
